I sugest you find a cheap hotel that has a Kitchenette that rents by the week untell you get established. There is a couple on State AVE in KC,KS one on Merriaim lane in Overland Park,KS and a few on Independence Blvd and I-35, One at 18Th and Cherry in KC,MO also one near the Downtown airport. Also the shelter (City Union Mission) just north of the bus station will let you stay at night and will help you get it together.
Thousands of homeless people find shelter from the streets through the Hotline for the Homeless, a service of City Union Mission. Men, women and families call the Hotline at (816) 474-4599 to find out which Kansas City shelters can provide temporary shelter for the night. The Hotline, a free service, works with other shelters to provide accurate information 24 hours a day, handling around 19,000 calls each year.

Could you relocate to California wiht that $500? They have many more programs to help people and nicer weather too.
